Sahin Altug
Mehmet Sahin Altug, master craftsman of one of a kind furniture sculpture, was born in the town of Mersin located on the Mediterranean Coast of Turkey.
Today living in Richmond, Virginia, Mehmet combines his talents as furniture maker, designer, and colorist into one of a kind furniture sculptures.
Inspiration for his furniture comes from the mystical influence of his Mediterranean childhood. The curves and lines of his pieces reflect the Roman and Middle Eastern architecture of an ancient land, the sensuousness of the human form, and the delicate crest of a wave as it approaches the shore.
Color is Mehmet's most vivid mode of expression. The vibrant tones and rich hues reflect a vivacity and whimsical quality of life. Color, texture, line, and form make this work a sensory playground. Moving the viewer to not just look but to touch open, and travel around through and with the fantasy of each piece.
Mehmet S. Altug's unique creations are rapidly becoming the focal point of shows and galleries throughout the United States.
Mehmet's work can be found in "An Amazing Gallery" in New York City, "Art Image" in Baltimore, Maryland, "Good Afternoon" in Minnesota, "Albert Douglas Gallery" in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, "The Collectors" in Merrick, New York, "Studio #2" in Vero Beach, Florida, "Tresure Throw" in Tennesse, "River View" in Virginia.

Phoebe Antrim
Phoebe was raised in Portland, Oregon, where the majestic Douglas Firs, mountain climbing, the NW coast and gardening nurtured an early love of nature. Even with naturalist/photographer/writer grandparents and an artistic mother and aunts, she came to painting only after retirement. A move to Virginia in 1981 brought an appreciation for its gentle hills and rivers and “finally, a garden of my own”. Travels back to the NW, New Hampshire, Newfoundland and Europe (esp. Ireland) have inspired many paintings.
“It’s a wonderful experience to create a visual image that is carried by my wonder at and love for a particular light, place, garden or color combination. I paint those subjects to which I have an emotional response, and that connection/feeling takes me through the painting process.”
Phoebe’s work has been selected into many juried shows in the Richmond area. She is a member of the Crossroads Art Center. Individuals throughout the country and local businesses have purchased her work.
Phoebe’s work may be found at The Crossroads Art Center.

She attended classes at Kansas City Junior College, Georgia State University, Sarah Brown’s Art Studio in Atlanta, as well as studied under Eloise Atkinson, Hugo Stevens and John MacLeod in Richmond, Virginia. She has also studied with the renowned David Greene, who is recognized as one of the nation’s leading portrait artists, as well as Jeffery Webb and Rhonda Yanow at the National Arts Club in New York City.

Steve Baranoff
Biography: Steve Baranoff, Nature Photographer
Steve Baranoff is a nature photographer who resides in both Richmond, VA and Austin, Texas. He was born in Montreal, Canada, but grew up in California, Missouri, and Texas where his father worked as a print maker, painter, and university art professor. Steve worked as an electrical engineer for 39 years before retiring at the end of 2008.
Steve’s interest in wild birds began in his childhood days in Southern California before his family moved to Texas in 1960. More recently he combined his interests in photography, sea kayaking, and birding into a single and focused avocation: wild bird photography. Steve has photographed birds in many states including Texas and Virginia.
His vision is to capture quality images of birds in their natural habitat and to employ these images to create artistic and tasteful prints that are displayed as bird art. Steve processes and prints all his bird photographs, using chromic inks and specialized papers and canvas that provide archival quality prints with rich colors and fine details.
Steve is a member of the Travis Audubon Society, Richmond Audubon Society, and the North America Nature Photographers Association (NANPA). His personal website is www.birdsbybaranoff.com.
Susie Barry
I create mosaic art as a way of communicating how I view the world around me. Using a rainbow of colored glass, and a great pride in workmanship and technique, I am challenged to create the sparkle of water, the delicate petals of a flower, the bold colors of a sunset or the blush of a cheek. I am always amazed and delighted when the individual pieces come together and capture a moment in time – or to tell a story – or to offer a destination for the viewer.
The colors and textures of nature have always been an inspiration for my art and the technique of mosaic art is the perfect medium to translate the treasures nature has to offer. I believe any surface is capable of receiving a mosaic covering – if it stand still, lookout! My work is applied to MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) which can be any size or shape. I also use the indirect method where I complete the mosaic on paper or mesh and then bring the completed work on site for final application.
I strive to arouse passion and enliven curiosity, to delight and inspire, and to develop a deeper appreciation for the mosaic art form.

Canan Boomer
Canan (pronounced Jah-nun) Boomer was born in Istanbul, Turkey, but was reared and educated in Frankfurt, Germany. She spent most of her youth in Germany and France where her studies and travels led her to a deep appreciation of the arts. Canan’s love for the arts and language of other cultures drew her back to painting when her children left home for college.
Canan says it’s difficult to describe why she paints but says, “I have this tiny person
inside me that wants to come out and create all sorts of colors and shapes. I love to paint with oils because of the consistency of the material, and watercolor, because of the unpredictability of it. My ideal painting is one with a simple and fresh approach that gives the viewer the impression of the subject. It is my goal is to create paintings that enrich and nurture the soul”.
In recent years Canan has exhibited at Shockoe Bottom Art Center, Uptown Gallery, Tuckahoe Library, Petersburg Art Center, and St. Michael’s Episcopal Church. Canan’s work is on permanent display at Crossroads Art Center.

Barbara Byrd
My interest in art began as a small child painting by numbers with acrylic. Years went by before my formal training as a student of the late Sidney E. King, reknowned Caroline County artist. During that time, he helped to develop my technique with oils and acrylics. I have been fortunate to pursue my life long love of painting now as a student of the late Carol Campbell, Susan Stuller, Ed King, Hsi-Mei Yate, Johnny Johnson and Bill Harris. Oil is now the medium of choice and I feel it is where my art becomes alive. My paintings showcase scenic Virginia, marine life, floral and fawna and world travels. I express life experiences through color, light, shapes and memories.
I am associated with Libertytown Arts Workshop, Fredericksburg, VA and exhibit and demonstrate at Studio 10. Ongoing exhibits include “Everything Gardening” on Caroline Street in Fredericks-
burg and “D&J Meat” in Bowling Green, VA and Caroline County
Visitor’s Center at Carmel Church.
Gloria J. Callahan
The Fine Art of Colored Pencil
About the Artist
Like many artists my love of art started in childhood. I have an
Associates degree in Accounting from John Tyler Community College. Work and raising my family occupied my life, although my heart dreamed of making art. I used creative outlets like gardening, ceramics, and needlepoint murals to express myself. As my sons grew, I finally was able to pursue decorative painting classes. I felt my soul relax and knew I had to learn all I could. This led to over 9 years of decorative, mural and faux painting.
In midlife I taught myself watercolor skills in order to become a contract colorist for a major art print company. Since 2000, I have worked doing hand colored antique reproduction engravings. All the while I strived to educate myself in drawing techniques with an emphasis on botanical and portrait art in my free time. This led me to a discovery of colored pencil as a media in 2005. Falling in love with the control, detail, and realism that can be achieved with this medium. I feel I have truly found my place in art. I have studied at multiple workshops from many of the Colored Pencil Society of America’s signature artists around the U.S.
My colored pencil paintings have been said to resemble oil, acrylic or watercolor paintings. Striving for a painterly appearance, techniques of layering the pencils and their translucent brilliant results keep me craving more. I use various tools borrowed from the experience I’ve gained from my other media to enhance what can be done with colored pencil. Using at times 20-25 layers of pencil to saturate each colored pencil painting it can be a time consuming media. I strive not only for detail but also for a balance with stylistic representation.
I work using artist grade colored pencils utilizing only the highest lightfast rated colors. Layering the color onto archival quality papers and board. When working on board I am able to seal my work with acrylic fixative and then 8 layers of archival UV varnish. Enabling me to then frame without glass much like an oil or acrylic painting.
Pulling from the beauty in my own back yard, my goal is to provide the oasis we all need in our hectic lives. I find the drama of the extreme lighting in late afternoon is the most intriguing component of my paintings. The luminescent color of the light through the blossom strikes me with the passion to capture it in my paintings. The human form and emotion is also a passion of mine so look forward to seeing some of my new work in the months to come.

Adele Castillo
Adele Castillo is a pet painter based in Richmond Va. She vividly captures the personality of her subjects using strong color and composition. After using her own pets as subject matter in her paintings, friends began asking her to do paintings of their pets which evolved into her current business. It is not unusual for her to have a months-long waiting list of commissions.
“I absolutely love what I do. I enjoy the challenge of making a work of art combined with a portrait, of capturing that something, that essence that defines the pet for their owner. I get to know my clients, both human and animal, and their stories. There is no greater joy than bringing someone’s pet to life on canvas and making a painting they’d be happy to hang anywhere in their home.”
Adele enjoys painting people and other subjects as well. She exhibits regularly in the Richmond and Hampton Roads areas. Many of her pieces hang in collections ranging from personal to professional offices, regionally as well as nation-wide.

Maggie Chalifoux
For me, the painting experience is always intuitive. There have certainly been frustrations and periods of hard work studying and attempting to make breakthroughs. But overall it is a joyful experience, and a blessing in my life. I hope the viewer can feel the pleasure I take in painting. At its very best, it becomes a dialogue between the piece and me, as the art spirit informs me of each step. The most wonderful results come from this experience of process, where I am more observer than director. Art for me is very personal and spiritual. I strive to bring something fresh and new to my process every day.
I am originally from Columbia, SC, though I have spent most of my life in Richmond. I studied art and art history at Virginia Commonwealth University. That first love was put aside for a career in IT and raising a family. After 25 years, I was finally able to paint full time. I have been showing my work around VA since 1990. In 2006 I moved to Lake Gaston in southern Virginia.
Over time, I move from objective to nonobjective, from still life to landscape. I don’t try to box my creative energies. I try to remain open and allowing the creativity to flow easily. I am endlessly curious, and love to experiment. In the past I have been primarily an oil/acrylic painter. This year I have begun to paint with encaustics (hot bees wax) and plan to continue in that direction. As for subject matter, I am finding a pleasing balance between non-objective (abstract) and figure works.

Kelly Chenault
Kelly Girl Glass
My mom said that I always had glue, paper and blunt scissors in my hand from the get go! I have since graduated to kilns, glass, grinders, paint, grout, etc. Making things is what makes me happy. I makes me even happier to have people enjoy my creations.
For 7 years, I ran a successful business called Eclectickels. In this business, I created wire-wrapped accessories for the home. This business kept me extremely busy… doing shows, selling to local stores and boutiques. My work was also on NBC12 and in Style Weekly. As time went by, I decided that I was ready to move on to other things. For two years, I have been on a “sabbatical” and spent the time (mainly raising young children, which is still my full time job) mosiacing and painting.
I have recently launched KellyGirl Glass and have been very pleased with the end results.

Jillian Chilson
The image I have posted here to represent my work was a favorite of quite a few friends, so I chosen to post here in honor of each of them, who have been cheering me down the path of photography.
One thing that keeps drawing me back to photography over the past 20 years are images that cause a smile to pop up on my face. It never ceases to amaze me how a single precious fleeting moment can be captured and enjoyed for years to come. It is a special bonus each time I see that smile crosses someone else’s face when viewing one of my images, especially if it reminds them of a dear memory.
When I go out with my camera, I find myself enamored with the world around me and trying to capture those sights. These moments that are inspiration for me to think of new and creative ways to capture what I see. Animals and nature are my favorite subjects to photograph, but I am inspired by new people and surroundings as well. I enjoy the challenges I have been offered recently to meet photographic needs from interior design photography to professional portraits with very specific requirements.
I have been honored to receive awards for my fine art photography across the state of Virginia and to have one of my images featured on the front page of the Flair section in the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
When I am not out taking pictures, I am also helping people and small businesses develop web sites. I also enjoy working with Parker, my Australian Shepherd, to prepare for agility competitions one day.
Please feel free to contact me with questions, comments and inquiries about my work: www.jillianchilson.com..

Sherri Conley
Freelance fine art photographer, Sherri Wilson Conley, resides in the historical city of Richmond, VA where she was born and raised. Living in central Virginia provides her with a wide variety of locations that are easily accessible for shooting ~ ranging from the city to the mountains of the Blue Ridge and along the scenic coasts of the Atlantic Ocean.
Developing a love of photography at an early age, Sherri began taking photos with her first camera, a Kodak Brownie Hawkeye, which was given to her by her parents. In her college years, she purchased her first “serious” camera and also invested in equipment for a darkroom where she spent countless hours in fascination watching images develop before her eyes.
Today the digital darkroom has replaced the traditional wet darkroom, and some of her images are manipulated using the photo editing software, Photoshop. Sherri loves experimenting with various creative photographic techniques with infrared photography being one of her favorites. She also enjoys in-camera techniques, handcoloring b&w images, and creating digital compositions.

ARTIST STATEMENT
"The creation of something new is not accomplished by the intellect, but by the play instinct acting from inner necessity."
-- Carl Jung
It is this play instinct that Jung speaks of that leads me to use a variety of oil paints and thinners, working on canvas or wood. Occasionally, I will add a rough layer of plaster and dig into it before it dries then paint over the rugged surface. Often, l'll use a seemingly finished work as the underpainting for another piece, contributing to a deep layering of color, texture, and emotion.
I am influenced by the historical styles of abstract expressionism, neo-abstraction, and formalism. I seek to present the tension between states of constancy and new growth in abstract ways that evoke a feeling or idea that can't be fully described, but is intrinsic to the human experience.
Linda Cromwell
Linda Cromwell is primarily an oil painter, but occasionally works in watercolor, acrylic and charcoal. Linda especially enjoys making art that includes animals and people. Many of her landscapes are plein air. She also does whimsical wire animal sculptures.
Artist Statement: "I love working from real life, although I do sometimes use photographs and my drawings as references. There is nothing that can take the place of actually being there as I create a new painting."
Linda presently lives with her husband “on the Plateau” in Tennessee. “The mountains, lakes and people here are a wonderful inspiration for making art.”
Education: Bachelor of Fine Arts - Magna cum Laude - Virginia Commonwealth University
Associate Degree in Science - Somerset Community College
