Claes Gustaf Tholand
Claes Gustaf Tholand born in Charlottesville, Virginia, and grew up in the farm and horse country of Rappahannock County. His parents immigrated to Manhattan from Stockholm and Goteborg and moved to Rappahannock County in the early 1950s.
Claes served in Danang, Vietnam, and was transferred to the Military Assistance Group (a NATO affiliate) in Naples, Italy. He continued his college education in Richmond in the fall of 1970. Trained in architecture (Assoc. of Architecture, North Carolina State University), interior design (Bachelor of Fine Arts, Virginia Commonwealth University), and fine arts (Ecole d’Arte, Naples, Italy), he has been involved mostly in major construction project management. He retired from the city of Richmond as a special capital projects manager in August 2016. Claes enjoys sketching and painting as a lifelong pursuit and pleasure.
He has undertaken the restoration and operation of a 40 ft. wood Chesapeake Deadrise work boat and, as a result, has found himself in and about the James River and area marinas and waterways to the Chesapeake Bay. Related drawings will be shown on his expanding website (www.claestholand.com) along with original colored-ink sketches drawn with a passion for correct detail and total naturalism.
