Join Susan for 10 days in the Greek islands in mid September 2010!  We will travel from Athens to 3 fabulous islands where we will explore the tiny Greek villages and beaches making a travel journal of sketches and small paintings. The travel journal along with photographs taken during our travels will be useful tools in creating larger paintings back home in our studios. Susan will teach us to capture essential information quickly, discuss the creative process and how to transform the travel journal into interesting, dynamic paintings.

The trip details are still in progress but the following is a brief description of each location on our itinerary.

Athens – The Greek capital is known as the birthplace of civilization. Visit the Parthenon, Acropolis, Plaka, historical sights and museums of antiquity.

Sifnos Visually attractive and still very Greek. Sifnos is a green island of ravines, mountaintops, and pristine beaches. Despite its small size (a hardy walker can explore the entire island on foot); Sifnos has numerous attractive small towns which can be used as a base for explorations. Apollonia, in the central hills, offers elegant small-town civility, with the added benefit of being the hub of an excellent public transportation system. The kastro (castle), on its seaside rock, is the medieval focus of the island, whereas Platis Yialos is a bustling beach resort. Sifnos is known for its excellent traditional Greek food and fresh seafood.

Naxos Another gem in the Aegean, Naxos is big, green and may have the

best beaches in Greece. This is a large island with beautiful valleys of grape and olive groves. The best beach is at Plaka with other nice ones at Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna, Mikri Vigla, and Kastraki, any of which would be the prized beach on any other island. The fishing village of Apollon is a popular location for day trips, with good seafood restaurants and a giant unfinished statue of the God Apollo lying in the ancient marble quarries since 600bc.

Santorini Visually spectacular, this island is considered one of the most beautiful locations in the world. The towns are located atop 1000 foot cliffs above a huge caldera, an active volcanic crater, which is situated today in the middle of a 32 square mile basin of water. Around the basin, hanging on cliffs, one can admire some of the most beautiful traditional villages of the Cyclades. The lively colors of the white Cycladic houses and blue painted windows contrast stunningly against the black volcanic rocks rising from sea. The villages are named Fira, Firostefani, Immerovigli and Oia. From Oia in particular visitors can view some of the most majestic sunsets in the world.

We are planning to go on or around September 15, 2010 for approximately 10 days. Currently we are working with a greek travel agency to get the best hotel rates, ferry tickets etc.
