Mehmet Sahin Altug, artist and master furniture craftsman, was born on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey in the town of Mersin. Mehmet now resides in Richmond, Virginia. He owns and operates the Bainbridge Art Center, where his studio is located.
Mehmet has spent 25 years creating whimsical furniture that incorporates mythological imagery and themes from his Turkish homeland. Recently he has expanded his creative repertoire to include painting. This transitional moment opened a two-dimensional pathway through image and color in which he expresses a reverence for the ordinary.
In his paintings, Mehmet builds rich images upon textured surfaces and embellishes them with burnished colors of an exotic coast. His artistic rendering of simple objects compels the viewer to dance through his topsy-turvy world in a state of delight and awe.
