Patrick Ryan is a semi-retired optometrist who has a strong interest in the visual arts and enjoys visiting museums, attending art shows, and watching his daughter work toward an MFA in painting. After seeing works of blown glass in museums and watching the process of blowing and manipulating hot glass, he wanted to try it himself. He is interested in both the scientific and artistic aspects of the process. He has taken private glass-blowing lessons with Chris Skibbe at The Glass Spot over the past four years, during which time he has learning the technical and physical properties of glass behind the hands-on molding. One of his focus areas is the contrast between the endless possibilities of vibrant colors and the clear or crystal areas of the glass. He is working to perfect his forms and developing new color combinations to take advantage of the interaction of the glass with light.
