CHRISTAPHORA ROBEERS

Christaphora Robeers, a well known international and local artist and instructor, began her painting career in her native Holland at age six.  After emigrating to America at age 10, Chris used painting as a form of communication as she learned English.  She paints in all mediums and also works in ceramic, stone, wax and wood.  Her paintings, classified as “Lyrical Expressionism” by the European Fine Arts Fair in Amsterdam, are in numerous corporate collections and have been shown across America and Europe in many one-person shows.   Her training includes print making with the masters in Holland, visual mathematics and art history at Harvard, and she has been an “Artist in Residence” with the Virginia Commission for the Arts.  She teaches watercolor and studio classes at Crossroads Art Center and has conducted many workshops both in the U.S. and abroad.  Currently her work can be viewed at Montpelier Cultural Arts Center in the Norway show, “North 610 10’ 00” from March 8 through April 20 and a one-person still-life exhibit at Art Works in Richmond from March 27 through April 19, 2009.  Christaphora also shows some of her work locally at Crossroads Art Center.  To view images of her work and for additional information about her art, please “google” Christaphora Robeers.

The focus of this workshop is on the “Modern Masters”, whose identity will be revealed in class.  Participants will study the esthetics and process of at least four contemporary artists and work on a series of exercises that will focus on the construction process these artists used to create their works.  Then you get the chance to create your own original works of art in the style of these artists.  No copying allowed, but you will incorporate the artist’s attributes that speak to you.

Participants will work from their own resources—photos and drawings.  No copyrighted works will be permitted.

DESIGN -- AN APPROACH TO STRUCTURING WELL COMPOSED PAINTINGS

Date:                      Thursday and Friday, August 27-28, 2009

Time:                     10:00 – 4:00 PM

Cost:                      $180

Class Size:            Minimum 5 students, Maximum 15 students

Location:              Crossroads Art Center, 2016 Staples Mill Road, Richmond

This workshop will focus on constructing works of art from a design approach.  Each artist, using their own photos, drawings, and visual subject matter will explore different compositions and formats.  Exercises in special relationships will be worked out through a series of activities before the painting process begins.  Participants then will develop a series of paintings using their own resource materials, such as photos and drawings, to create a number of differently formatted paintings.  No copyrighted works will be permitted.
