Barbara Dill

Tired of running into dead ends, Barbara Dill began to search for a way out of the limitations of traditional woodturning. She found the answer in multi-axis woodturning, which turns shapes using more than one axis on a lathe. This allows the creation of asymmetrical spindles instead of traditionally produced symmetrical and round objects.

Barbara first experienced the art of woodturning in 1988 at a carving class in Richmond, Virginia. She has studied under Michael Hosaluk, Ray Key, and David Ellsworth, and has attended various symposia, workshops, and demonstrations. In 1998, she began to teach woodturning at The Hand Workshop (now the Visual Arts Center of Richmond).

Barbara received a B.S. in nursing from the University of Tennessee in 1968. Her career took her to Europe and east Africa in the early 1970s. She received a masters of psychiatric nursing from Boston University in 1980, and she has coordinated psychiatric aspects of emergency departments for the city of Boston and at the Medical College of Virginia.

Barbara enjoys sharing her knowledge through teaching. She has published articles in American Woodturner journal and has written a book about multi-axis turning. She attended the American Association of Woodturners (AAW) 2011 National Symposium as an emerging artist; demonstrated at the AAW Symposium, the Southwest Association of Turners, the Appalachian Center for Craft, and Arrowmont in 2012; and presents at turning clubs in many states.
