This is a mixed media piece (acrylic, colored pencils, graphite, sandpaper, india Ink, colored inks) depicting musicians performing for a variety of audience members, all within a backdrop of the city of Richmond. Also I use a variety of recurrent images such as giraffes, fans and water towers for a touch of whimsy.
Artist Statement:
I create music related paintings where I visually meander around the interiors of a jazz club and focus on the musicians, dancers, patrons and bartenders, capturing them in all manner of unexpected social interactions. I also combine a quirky mixture of unrelated images to enrich and confuse these figurative paintings. I apply acrylic paint in layers using unorthodox tools such as cauliflower, the wrong side of a brush, fingernails, used rags and discarded worn out brushes, combined with occasional traditional applications. I attempt to create a painterly, rich and puzzling surface using many abstract elements
I attended Virginia Commonwealth University in Painting and Printmaking and graduated in 1976 and have been a full-time artist for over 35 years. I maintained a studio in Alexandria‘s Torpedo Factory for 30 years and now reside in the Fan in Richmond.
