This footed open form is called Holuhraun which is the name of an Icelandic volcano that spectacturaly erupted about 10 years ago in the central highlands. The rib that extends from slot in the rim was painted to represent hot and cooling lava. The texture is showing the how the lava flows freely

Artist's Statement:

My woodturning adventure began back in 2012 and over time my skills have improved and I have developed my own creative style. I primarily create lathe turned hollow and open forms in wood from native Virginia trees. I try to work with wood from trees that were felled by a storm, disease or for safety reasons. I like to embellish my work with various carving techniques, coloring and wood burning. Though the trees I work with are no longer living they still live on in my creations.
