Doug Zeigler
Doug's Bio
Douglas Orr Zeigler was born in Dixon, Illinois and attended the University of Chicago and The Art Institute of Chicago (BFA). He studied drawing, painting and design with several European émigré faculty who emphasized classical skills of drawing and painting, along with an appreciation for the rich variety of traditional and modern movements in art. Building on this, Doug developed an individual vision which is grounded in representation, but also taps expressive, spontaneous impulses—an approach that revels in energies of color, line, form and texture. Doug believes that the artist has a responsibility to be faithful to his will to create.
“In my work, I attempt to visit those places where my ideas take form with paint on canvas, or pigmented water on paper. Nature is the starting point, but my sub-conscious guides an interpretation of what I ‘know’ or ‘see’ before me. If others share for a moment what I experience through this journey then my work is successful."
He also accepts commissions for residential or commercial settings: portraits, landscapes, coastal subjects, marine scenes including boat portraits—virtually anything is possible. Through a step-by-step process employing preliminary sketches and color studies, a successful result is assured.
Doug works outdoors and from his studio in Manakin Sabot, Virginia.
