Born in Columbus, Ohio in 1968, Ron Johnson received an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2003. Since then, Johnson has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally as well as being a resident at the Ucross Foundation in Cleamont, Wyoming in 2004 and at the Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris, France in 2002. Johnson uses strategically placed canvas strips to act as dam walls to corral the poured paint and polyeurathane mix. Each layer must be sanded vigorously to ensure as much precision as possible. This sanding process gives the surface a unique sheen, while simultaneously transparent and opaque, reminiscent of encaustic. Through Johnson's process, the layers become diffused and viscously permeable, with the crisp edges and lost-and-found traceable history.
